Crate Training

Here at GSRAW, we are big advocates of crate training.  That does not mean that we think every single dog should be crated.  There are a lot of dogs out there that don’t need to be crated!  Some come to rescue already crate trained.

Crate training 101

Some come to rescue and obviously were already housebroken and taught not to chew inappropriately.  Most of us either have in the past or currently crate our dogs when needed.  There is a great article below all about crate training.  If you are an “anti-crate” person or are just not sure if crating is for you, please read the article.  It comes from Bark Bytes Canine Cyber-Magazine.  Directly below are some pictures of what can happen when you DON’T choose to crate train your dog!

This is from a foster dog that was not happy just being in the foster room and decided to get out – no matter what the cost of the door!  The baby gates were not there when the door was still in-tact.  And yes!  He got out!

Oscar was adopted through GSRAW.  His owners do use crate training, but had decided that maybe Oscar was “grown up” enough to be left out of his crate when they were gone.  As you can see….  he was not ready!!

As you can see by these three pictures, being left out of the crate can be loads of fun for the dog!  Do you think she really needed that many Q-tips?  You can also see that a baby gate does not necessarily do the trick.  The photo directly above and the Q-tip photo were both on the “other side” of the gate that you see above right.

When you’ve been away at a long day of work, do you really want to come home to this?  No?  Please read the article below about crate training!

When properly trained, dogs will learn to love their crates and most will go in entirely on their own.  They feel safe there.  This is Cosmo and Logan.  They were both adopted through GSRAW by their foster family!

NOTE: We don’t recommend two big dogs for one crate.  Logan and Cosmo just love each other so much that they like to snuggle together in their crate.
